How Many Days Do You Need in Kraków?

Kraków rewards a slower pace than most first-time visitors expect — here’s what different trip lengths realistically get you, so you can plan around what matters most to you.
2 days: the Old Town and one day trip
A weekend is enough to properly see the Old Town, Wawel Castle and Kazimierz — Kraków’s centre is compact and very walkable — plus one full-day trip, almost always either Auschwitz-Birkenau or the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
4 days: both major day trips, unhurried
Four days is the sweet spot for most visitors: it fits both the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and the Wieliczka Salt Mine as separate days rather than rushing either, with time left over to actually enjoy the city itself rather than just passing through it.
Trying to fit Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka into the same day is technically possible and a genuinely bad idea — give each its own day.
7 days: further into Poland
A week opens up a trip to Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains, and enough time to reach Warsaw or the Baltic coast if you want more than one Polish city on the trip.
A few planning rules of thumb
- Book Auschwitz-Birkenau ahead — it’s the one thing in Kraków that genuinely sells out.
- Give the salt mine a full half-day — the guided route runs 2–3 hours underground alone.
- The Old Town needs less time than people expect — a day, not three.
- Pace the heavy days — Auschwitz-Birkenau is emotionally demanding; don’t stack it against another big day.
Whatever length you choose, build it around the one or two things you came for and let the rest fill in around them.
