Krakow Airport to the city — bus, train, taxi, or hire a car?
For a city-only Krakow stay, train or bus usually beats a hire car. The airport train runs to Kraków Główny; daytime buses stop outside the terminal. Hire at KRK when the trip continues into southern Poland.
Kraków Airport in Balice is about 15–20 minutes from the Main Square by road. If you are sleeping in the Old Town or Kazimierz, do not collect a hire car for the transfer. The train and the city buses exist for this ride. Hire when the days after arrival leave the city.
Train, bus, or taxi
Train — SKA1 to Kraków Główny
Koleje Małopolskie run SKA1 between Kraków Airport (Kraków Lotnisko) and Kraków Main Station, continuing toward Wieliczka. The airport station sits behind the multi-storey car park and is linked to the terminal by a covered footbridge. The airport publishes a fare of PLN 20 to Kraków Główny and PLN 24 through to Wieliczka, with luggage free. Daytime trains are often about every half hour and thinner early and late — confirm the live timetable on the day, including any engineering work. Allow about 20 minutes on the train plus the walk to the platform.
Bus — 209, 300, and night 902
Daytime agglomeration buses 209 and 300, plus night bus 902, stop outside the terminal. They are the cheaper ride and the slower one in traffic, and they do not all drop you on the Main Square. The airport’s published 30-minute agglomeration ticket is PLN 6 (PLN 3 reduced). If the ride plus a city connection will run longer, buy the longer ticket on the same table — the published 60-minute fare is PLN 8. Validate when you board. Frequencies change; use the departures screen in the hall rather than a memorised interval.
Taxi — official rank, not a tout
Official taxis wait outside arrivals and make sense with a lot of luggage, a late landing, or a hotel the train does not pass. Agree the fare to your address before you sit down, or confirm you are in a marked car. This page does not invent a fixed taxi price — it moves with traffic and the exact street. When a hire car wins
Stay in the city, then day-trip with someone else driving. Auschwitz is a full day with a timed guided entry. Wieliczka is half a day and also sits on the airport train line toward the mine. A single Zakopane day from the square is usually a tour, not a car you then have to park on Krupówki.
Hire at KRK when you are touring southern Poland for several days, sleeping in the Tatras, or driving on from the airport the same afternoon. Is the train or the bus better from Krakow Airport?
For most Old Town and Kazimierz hotels, the SKA1 train to Kraków Główny is the straightforward arrival: a covered footbridge to the station, then a short walk or a tram. Buses 209 and 300 are cheaper and fine if your stop is on their route. Check the board — neither bus is a door-to-door Main Square service.
How do I find the airport train?
Follow signs for the train or Koleje Małopolskie. The station is directly beside the terminal, behind the multi-storey car park, across a covered footbridge. Buy a ticket in the station, on the Koleje Małopolskie site, or from the machine or conductor on the train. The published airport-to-main-station fare is PLN 20; confirm it on the day.
Do I need a hire car for a city-only stay?
No. A weekend in the Old Town, Kazimierz and Wawel does not need a car at Balice. You would pay to park it and sit in traffic. Take the train or bus, sleep in the centre, and hire only on the morning you actually leave town.
What if I land late at night?
Do not assume a train is waiting after midnight. Check the last SKA1 before you fly. Night bus 902 covers later arrivals on a slower route. Otherwise use the official taxi rank outside arrivals. A hotel at the airport is worth it only for a very early departure the next morning.
How do I get to Auschwitz or Wieliczka from the airport?
Go into Kraków first. Auschwitz is a full day with a timed guided entry — book a tour with transfer from the city rather than driving from the airport and parking at the memorial.
