The stairs are part of the product

The descent is a tight wooden spiral — several hundred steps in a queue. The lift is only on the way back. If stairs are a problem, check that before you pay, not at the shaft.

In summer it is colder than the Main Square. Bring a layer. Shoes with grip — the floor can be damp. A large backpack goes in a locker (often paid).

Do not pair it with Auschwitz the same day

Two transfers, two time caps and no slack. Wieliczka in the morning, Old Town in the afternoon. Auschwitz — a separate day, with nothing after it.

How long is the Wieliczka visit?

Underground itself is usually 2–3 hours and about 3 km of walking. With transfers from Kraków count 4.5–5 hours. That is half a day, not an hour-long attraction.

Can I go in without a city tour?

Yes — the SKA train to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia plus your own timed ticket. The difference is who holds the slot and who drives you. In season, English midday times vanish; a pickup package is then cheaper on nerves than “it will work out”.

Is the mine suitable for children and people with claustrophobia?

Children usually manage if they can handle the stairs and two hours in a group. Claustrophobia, serious heart or breathing issues — read the operator limits. These are underground corridors, not a viewpoint.

Are photos allowed?

Usually yes, without flash; rules have sometimes been paid and they change. Confirm at the desk. St Kinga’s Chapel still looks better in memory than on a phone.
