Most southern Poland self-drives should start at Krakow Airport (KRK) in Balice, about 15–20 minutes from the Main Square by road. KRK pickup

  • Terminal desk or a shuttle lot

    Some suppliers sit in the car-rental area on level +1 of the terminal. Others meet you with a van to a nearby lot, including the Medweckiego car park. The confirmation email names the point — do not guess at baggage claim.

  • Allow time after landing

    Build 30–60 minutes after you clear baggage before you expect to be on the road, longer when several flights land together. A walk-up in July or on a May long weekend is not a bargain. Compare before you fly.

  • Photograph the car in the lot

Car vs Auschwitz/Wieliczka day tours

Auschwitz-Birkenau is about 70 km and a full day, with peak-hour entry on a licensed guide. A transfer from your Kraków hotel keeps the ticket and the driving on one booking. Collecting a car at KRK to do the memorial on the arrival day usually means a queue, a car park, and an evening you will not want.

Wieliczka Salt Mine is 14 km and half a day. Entry is guided, and the way down is stairs. A pickup tour, or the train toward the mine, is enough. Do not pair it with Auschwitz on the same day.

Zakopane and the Tatras are the case for a car when you are staying the night. For one day from the Main Square, a hotel-pickup tour usually beats Saturday parking on Krupówki and the standstill on DK7. Hire at KRK when the mountains are the base, not a photo stop.

Documents

Licence and identity

Bring the physical driving licence and a passport or national ID. If the licence is not in Latin script, suppliers usually also want an International Driving Permit. Phone photos of the licence are often refused.

Card in the lead driver’s name

Most desks place a deposit hold on a credit card in the main driver’s name. Debit cards are sometimes accepted with a higher hold or extra cover. The amount is on the offer you pick — this page does not invent a figure.

Read the excess before you pay

Third-party liability is standard. The decision is collision excess and exclusions such as glass, tyres and the underbody. A cheap daily rate with a large excess is not cheap. Winter tyres on the road to Zakopane should be in the contract, not assumed.
